The Cost of Four Nickels, described as a layered modern-day fairytale, was conceived from a passing thought I had: "How would a puppet-maker feel if they created an effigy, only to see it burned in a protest?" This turned out to be content practice for my novel American Still Life.

The Cost of Four Nickels

A Palimpsest is one of the most autobiographical pieces of fiction I've written. Simon's experience in the story, particularly the opening, is based on loosely fictionalized real events. It's also probably clear I'd been reading a lot of Steven Millhauser when I wrote this.
